Common Reasons for Hair Loss

Common Reasons for Hair Loss

Our hair is our pride and joy however we choose to wear it. It is devastating to wake up to hair falling out. Don’t panic, take a beat and let’s go over some of the main causes of hair loss and what we can do about it.

Because hair is a reflection of your overall health, hair loss is our body’s first defense in alerting you there is something going on internally. Here are some of the most common factors and please note that this information is to be used as a guide and not in lieu of professional advice based on your personal situation.

  • Stress: our bodies are not good at managing stress on their own. It can effect your thyroid function which in turn sends messages to your pituitary gland that signals the body’s fight or flight response. This causes you organs to work harder and the more precious organs are protected like the heart and liver to keep the body functioning. That is why stress untreated can be the most deadly silent killer because most of the battle is fought internally. Listen to your body. You hair may be alerting you something bigger is going on.

  • Aggressive styling. You won’t believe how many clients come in from having their hair braided too tight or damaged in taking down weaves. Your hair is very delicate and a lot more fragile than you think. In a lot of cases traction alopecia can be a permanent condition.

  • Age, diet and nutrition are important factors to maintaining healthy hair. As we age, our hair can lose its pigment leaving with courser and finer texture which we see as gray hairs. Lacking certain vitamins and nutrients in our diet can cause breakouts, bloating, hair loss among many other side effects. It is important to get ahead of it now to avoid long term health effects to minerals we need in our diet.

  • Chemical misuse and abuse is another cause of hair loss. Relaxers, texturizes and perms have been know to have adverse effects (sometimes fatal) especially on black women. These chemicals were designed to alter the structure of the hair’s permanent bonds to create different textures. These chemicals are exposed to the scalp which is porous to absorb moisture and nutrients. However, absorbing harmful chemicals have shown to miniaturize the hair strands at the roots causing follicular degeneration hair loss. Dyes and hair colors are also damaging in excess amounts. Lifting the natural pigment of the hair strand can leave with brittle, dry and loss of elasticity until the hair pops or breaks off.

Most people have a mixture of different reasons for hair loss. No two clients have the same condition even if they have similar stories. It is really important to evaluate what the cause is of hair loss to determine whether hair can be regained.
